Lighthouse Nursery

Nursery Facilities

Lighthouse Nursery is run from a designated nursery room with its own toilet facility within the Thornhill Church Centre.  The nursery has a garden attached which we use whenever possible to play and learn outdoors.  We also have use of the main hall on rainy days and an upstairs room for small group activities and organised play.

Opening Hours

Nursery sessions run Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 12:00 and from 13:00 to 16:00.  We are open for forty-four weeks per year. We close for half terms, a week at Easter and Christmas, three weeks in the summer, and bank holidays.

Provision can be made for your child to start at 8:30 instead of 9:00 at a small extra charge.

We take eighteen children per session aged from two and a half to five years old. We have five experienced members of staff with a variety of professional qualifications, including teaching qualifications and QCF Level 3 in Childcare, Learning and Development.  The staff/child ratio is never less than 1:6, and we have regular inspections by the Care Inspectorate for Wales (CIW).

Our Purpose and Vision

The purpose of the Nursery is:

to serve pre-school children and their parents in the Thornhill area by providing the best environment to develop the whole child.

Based on Christian principles, we value each child as an individual, and each family as special.  We aim to care for, nurture and encourage every child to achieve his/her full potential.  Our goal is to cultivate happy, confident, self- motivated and enquiring children.  The primary language spoken is English with incidental Welsh included.

The Curriculum

We aim to offer as broad a curriculum as possible, to contribute to the all-round growth and development of your child. We follow the Foundation Phase, and the areas of learning that are covered within this are:

  • Creative Development
  • Physical Development
  • Welsh Language Development
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  • Mathematical Development
  • Language, Literacy and Communication Skills
  • Personal and Social Development, Wellbeing and Cultural Diversity

Our Healthy Snack policy can be read here.

Walkover to Thornhill Primary School

Walkover to Thornhill Primary

We offer a ‘walkover service’ to or from the school nursery at Thornhill Primary.

Children are collected from the school at 11.35am, and we walk them to Lighthouse where they can have their packed lunch and then stay with us for the afternoon session, which finishes at 4pm.

Children who are at Thornhill Primary nursery for the afternoon session can come to Lighthouse in the morning from 8.30 or 9am. They stay and eat their packed lunch with us, and we then walk them over to the school for 12.55pm, when their afternoon session starts.

We are always delighted with quality of care and provision provided by Lighthouse. Thank you for all you do.

The staff are the key strength. What a brilliant team! Individual attention is better than in a state nursery. Everyone takes a lot of pride in their job and care over the children.

[My child] has improved and developed so much in such a short space of time. I’m happy with the nursery and have recommended it to friends.

Your staff are so lovely and easy to talk to. I really enjoy the regular emails updating us with what you’ve been doing so we can talk about it at home.

Very approachable and friendly. Always greeted with smiles and always easy to speak to. Lots of strengths: My daughter now speaks some basic Welsh which is amazing!
